Abruzzo

Abruzzo is an Italian wine region that is not very well known.

She owes her fame to the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a pleasant red wine from the Montepulciano grape. Most white from Abruzzo is made from Trebbiano and is especially suitable for the weekday evening. Abbruzo is in the middle of Italy, on the Adriatic coast near Pescara. Although the wines are generally not of spectacular quality, the mild climate and the south-facing slopes right on the coast offer good conditions for viticulture. But Abruzzo never went for the medals and its wine has traditionally been drunk mainly by the locals. Of course, there are exceptions that confirm the rule. Winemakers who have put their heads above ground level in the region and export their wines far beyond the borders …

Montepulciano

The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the best-known wine from Abbruzo and can reach a very decent level. It is made from the Montepulciano grape – not to be confused with the wine town of Montepulciano. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is soft and has pleasant tannins. That appeals to a wide audience. A fruity rosé is made in Abruzzo under the name Cerasuolo, also from the Montepulciano grape.

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

White is made almost exclusively from the Trebbiano grape. It produces fresh, but flat white wines throughout Italy, and that is no different in Abruzzo. They are mainly drunk locally with meals. The Pecorino grape is also a typical “Abruzzo grape”. Not to be confused with the cheese that bears the same name. But because of its low yield per hectare, the Pecorino is not popular with every winemaker from Abruzzo. A pity, because he can give strong dry white wine, nice and nutty and crispy.
