Alto Adige

Alto Adige – or Süd-Tirol – belonged to Austria until the First World War.

You can tell by everything. German is still spoken, and wine is made from “Austrian grapes” such as Weissburgunder, Blauburger, Gewürztraminer and Müller-thurgau. But the most important grape of this mountainous region, the Lagrein, can only be found in Alto Adige. You can buy one wine from Alto Adige from us. You can find this wine on the left side of this page. Alto Adige is located around the mountain town of Bolzano, in the far north of Italy, against the Austrian border. It is often mentioned in the same breath as neighboring Trentino, but we do not because there are significant differences between the two. Alto Adige still speaks German and the grapes on the labels of the local harvest often also look Austrian. Until the end of the last century, Alto Adige was primarily a producer of moderate wine. Grape growers tried to squeeze as large a harvest as possible from their vineyards. Figuratively, because they sold that harvest to cooperatives, who then pressed wine from it. Often from the Vernatsch grape, because it gives a lot of juice per square meter of vineyard.
