Andlau
Andlau is located in Alsace. It is a typical traditional village focused on tourism and viticulture.
Andlau has only 86 hectares of vineyards in a narrow valley. Geology is rather complex, and the three Grand Crus have a different style. Wiebelsberg is the largest Grand Cru. The sandstone base produces a light vibrant Riesling. Moenchberg has a granite base. The Pinot Gris feels at home on this terroir and produces juicy wines. The Grand Cru Kastelberg has a unique terroir of schist that creates exciting wines with lots of minerality.
History
Andlau was founded in the 9th century around a monastery. This was built for the wife of King Charles le Gros. She couldn’t have children and sent her into the wilderness. There she met a bear who dug his claws into the ground. The queen thought that the grooves made in the ground represented a card and interpreted it as a sign of God. She used the map to find the perfect location for the monastery. The bear is still the symbol of Andlau.
