Burgenland

Burgenland is a wine region in Austria with surprising versatility.

Burgenland is a wine region in Austria with surprising versatility. It has a wide arsenal of quality wines ranging from fresh, crispy to full-bodied white wines, powerful red wines and – which is unfortunately not often known – beautiful noble sweet wines. The latter in particular, together with the Sauternes and Tokaj, belong to the world class. It is also believed that Burgenland produces the best terroir wines. The region is the most easterly and borders Hungary over its entire length and is best known for the Steppe Lake Neusiedlersee. This area (together with the Carnuntum) is influenced by the Pannonian climate. They also say that it is the continental climate of the Hungarian pustas (pusta = grass / steppe landscape of the Hungarian plains). Because these areas are sheltered by Wienerwald, Alps and surrounded by Carpathians and Balkan Mountains, this warmth lingers and is retained by the stony subsoil. There is also cooling due to the always present air flows. The grapes therefore have a slower overall ripening and less mildew. As a rule, this gives wines with more body and character.
