Condrieu
The wines that come from here are always made from 100% viognier.
Condrieu, about 40 km south of Lyon on the right bank of the Rhone, is the main source of white wine in the northern Rhône. The wines that come from here are always made from 100% viognier. The vineyards (± 168 ha in 2013) lie parallel to the river like a ribbon of about 16 km and, as it were, connect the seven villages that fall under the AOC Condrieu. These are from north to south: Condrieu, Vérin, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône (all AOC since 1940), Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Pierre-de Boeuf and Limony (the latter villages were added in 1967).
There are hardly any opportunities for further expansion, which means that Condrieu wines are somewhat scarce and have a considerable price tag. The low basic yield of 37 hl / ha (and an average of 29 hl / ha in 2013) and the difficult to cultivate vineyards on the slope also play a role. The soil contains granite and “arzelle” (a mixture of granite splits, mica, slate and clay); the climate is continental, with slight Mediterranean influences.
