The Côte Rôtie, with its sun-drenched slopes, produces a warm, robust, aromatic and richly colored red wine. Slightly rough and dark in their early years, these wines become softer and develop a beautiful bouquet (of violets and raspberries) as they age. The production is dominated by two grape varieties: Viognier and Syrah. The wines of the Côte Rôtie are considered the best Côtes du Rhône.

The vineyard extends over 3 municipalities: Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis, Tupin-Semons, on the right bank of the Rhone. The vineyards are located in the Rhône department on very steep slopes that face south and southwest. The Côte-Rôtie is divided into the Côte brune, Côte blonde and Côte rosier.

The rules within the AOC

One of the oldest wine regions in France. The Romans have developed well.Côte-Rôtie has been classified as AOC for red wines since 1940.

The alcohol percentage must be at least 10%. In addition, the yield is controlled. A vineyard cannot have a higher yield than 40 hectoliters per hectare. The red wine must consist of at least 80% syrah grape and a maximum of 20% viognier.

The most important grape of this wine region is the Syrah. In addition to the Syrah, the wines are supplemented with Viognier.

The wines

The red wines look dark red and are fringed purple during his youth. They have a bouquet of raspberry, herbs and a hint of violets. At a richer age, aromas of vanilla and fruit seeds. In the mouth we find notes of truffles, dry fruit, mocha, chocolate and cinnamon. This wine goes well with lamb, guinea fowl or with waterfowl, but also with asparagus and truffles. Depending on the age, it is better to uncork it 1 to 3 hours before consumption and decant it into a carafe. The Côte-Rôtie matures slowly and can grow very old (5 to 15 years). When processing the grapes after harvest, the blue and white grapes must be fermented together. The vinification takes 2 to 3 weeks and takes place at a relatively high fermentation temperature of 28-32 ° C. After the first alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place, after which the wines are placed in barrels at the end of November. The container storage takes a relatively long time (15 to 30 months).

The climate and the terroir

The vineyards of the Cote Côte are in a region with a temperate continental climate. It means that the summers are dry and warm but that there is enough rainfall throughout the year. The vineyards are located on steep taras of mountains / rocks of granite. The relatively small area can also be subdivided into different terroirs. The bottom on the “Côte blonde” is covered with a layer of limestone that contains a lot of slicium. The soil of the “Côte brune” is different and rich in clay with iron oxide.
