Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is a region south of the Medoc.

5 Grands Crus Classés are located within this area. The smaller apple stations fall under this AOC: Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Julien, Saint Estèphe. Haut Médoc wines have a world reputation and are known for the highest quality. Characteristic of these wines is, when they are drunk, they can develop a phenomenal bouquet. Very elegant, intense and complex in taste. In their younger years, these wines are often still somewhat closed and stiff. Haut Médoc wines can sometimes reach the age of a century.

Grape varieties

Grape red wine varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carménère.

The terroir of the Haut-Medoc

The soil consists mainly of pebble hills, which are so typical of the Médoc. These ensure perfect drainage of the water and are loose and airy. Due to their barren nature, the pebble mounds force the vines to penetrate their roots deep into the ground in search of nutrients. The pebble hills rest on limestone plateaus.
