Languedoc
This area was formerly called the wine shed of France
Because of the large amount of bad wines that were made there. Since the 70s, the quantity has fallen, and the level has risen. The area is still developing positively. The Languedoc is formed by three southern French departments: Aude, Gard and Hérault.
Soil and climate
The Languedoc is located in the south of France close to the Mediterranean Sea, which provides a warm sea climate with warm summers and moderate winters. Due to the size of the area, the soil type is very varied.
Wines
The Languedoc is currently very popular due to its good price-quality ratio, especially compared to the other wine regions in France. The area can be divided into 2 types; the traditional terroir wines at appellations such as Coteaux du Languedoc, Fitou, Corbières, Minervois, Faugères and Saint-Chinian and on the other hand the modern wines of the Vin de Pays d’Oc. The traditional grape varieties include carignan, grenache, cinsault and the strongly emerging syrah. The Vin de Pays d’Oc mainly uses cepage grapes such as chardonnay, merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
