AViticulture has been found here for 2000 years, especially around the old town of Roquemaure. This place was in the past the port for exporting wine to the Netherlands and England. In 1947 the region got its own appellation. Roquemaure is opposite Châteauneuf du Pape on the other side of the Rhone and looks a bit less friendly when you drive on. The area covers approximately 600 hectares of vineyard with the grape varieties typical of the southern Rhône region. Due to the enormous variation in soil within the area of the appellation, you will come across different types of wine. However, most of the wines are above average in quality to sometimes very good. Many of the red wines undergo wood aging. The white Lirac is very worthwhile. The white Lirac consists mainly of Clairette, Bourboulenc and white Grenache. The yield is kept low so that a nice full wine is created.
