Mendoza
Vineyards in the desert? Sounds unlikely.
Nevertheless, the dusty wine region of Mendoza produces around 70 percent of all Argentinian wine. The warm and dry climate of this wine region lends itself exceptionally well to viticulture. Because in the shadow of the western Andes there is virtually no rain, so that diseases do not get a hold on the plants. Fortunately, the Incas built an advanced network of irrigation canals in Mendoza centuries ago. Modern wineries such as Luigi Bosca reap the benefits of this with beautiful Malbec and other red wines. And in the slightly higher volcanic sub-area Tupungato, for example, Domain Jean Bousquet and Finca Sophenia specialize in excellent white wines.
