Rapel Valley

The mountain range along the coast forms the western hem of the valley.

The average height is less than 500 meters above sea level, without pronounced peaks. The vineyards are located 600 meters above sea level on the west side of the valley and at 1,000 meters above sea level on the east side, in the foothills of the Andes. The climate, which is described as slightly moist Mediterranean, is under the influence of the high-pressure area above the Pacific Ocean. The Rapel Valley is a very versatile area and has many microclimates. The average rainfall is 710 mm per year and the strong wind causes greater temperature differences. The temperature is on average 14 ° C per year and reaches a maximum of 32 ° C in January. The ground, crossed by the Cachapoal and Tinguiririca rivers, consists of fertile clay, loam lime and sand. Blue grapes are the most common here and the Merlots are among the best in Chile.

Viu Manent, Anakena, Morandé are just a few of the names in this varied wine region, including the Colchagua Valley. Most vines carry Carmenère, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The carmenère is soft and delicate, the Syrah very concentrated and powerful. The Cabernet is slightly more modest but has a special taste. People come across names such as Conosur, Bisquertt, Miguel Viu, Casa Silva and Montes, who produce Montes Alpha here in the Apalta district. Other houses such as Santa Rita and Casa Lapostolle also contributed to the prestige of this zone.
