Rioja
The making of wine in Rioja started well before the beginning of the era.
At the time, the Romans were active in growing wine. Rioja is therefore the most renowned wine region in Spain. In 1991, Rioja received the Denominación de origen calificada (DOC) status. This DOC status only applies to wines of the highest quality, which have proven their quality over a long period. A Rioja can be called Reserva if the wine has been aged for at least 12 months. In addition, the wine must be stored in the bottle for another 2 years.
La Rioja
Rioja is a type of wine that is produced in the region of the same name. Wine was produced in Spain before Roman times. La Rioja, the most prestigious wine region in Spain, lies on the banks of the Ebro. The Rioja region is a small autonomous region in the north of Spain, but it is one of the most important wine regions in Europe. The region owes its fertility to the Ebro and Rio Oja rivers, to which the region owes its name. Since 1982, with the reorganization of Spain after the dictatorial degree of Franco Rioja, it became an autonomous region.
