Rivesaltes

Rivesaltes is the largest AOC for sweet red wine in Côtes du Roussillon.

The French designation for these wines is vins doux naturels. Rivesaltes (both the region and the city) is part of the Côtes du Roussillon and lies west of the Mediterranean Sea.

Rules

Like within every AOC there are rules regarding the composition of the wine. For example, the alcohol percentage of the wine must be at least 15%. In addition, most of the wine must have a minimum sugar content of 252 grams per liter. At harvest, the yield of a hectare of vineyard must remain below 30 hectoliters.

In the vineyard

Characteristic of this wine region is the high temperature in the summer and of course the influence of the sea. The soil is diverse and consists of granite, slate, clay, lime. There are many stones in the vineyards. Like within every AOC there are rules concerning the use of grapes in Rivesaltes. The wines must: grenache noir (at least 75% with Grenat or Rouge), grenache blanc, grenache gris, macabeu, malvoisie, muscat (maximum 20%) and sometimes carignan, cinsault, listan and syrah.

Four types of Rivesaltes

Rivesaltes is made in four different ways

Ambré: Only white grapes are used in making Ambré. In addition, two years of education in tubs or barrels is mandatory. This Rivesaltes is not red but is an amber-colored wine with scents of nuts, almond, roasted coffee and candied fruits.

Grenat or Rouge: When making Grenat or Rouge you must use at least 75% Grenache Noir. These wines must the wine must be stored for at least 12 months reductive (without oxygen). After further maturation of three months in the bottle, this young wine is colored deep red. The wine has aromas of red fruits (blackberry, raspberry, cherry and cassis).

Tuilé: The Tuilé type must consist of at least 50% grenache noir and must be stored oxidatively for two years. The orange-brown wines, often rancios, smells of roasted coffee, cocoa, tobacco and candied fruits.

Hors d’Age: Hors d’Age type salives must be stored for at least five years. There are wines that are stored for much longer. Sometimes up to 20 years. These wines are concentrated and develop complex aromas.
