Southern valleys
The Aconcagua Region is divided into two separate areas: the Aconcagua - and the Casablanca Valley.
Other valleys in which viticulture takes place are for example the Itata and the Bío-Bío in the southern region. The Itata Valley offers a semi-moist Mediterranean climate with an annual rainfall of between 650-700 millimeters. The soil has a brown-red color and is of volcanic origin. The area is suitable for blue and white grapes and the original planting of the País is increasingly giving way to high-quality grapes.
The southernmost wine region (around 600 kilometers from Santiago), named after the Bío-Bío River, extends from the city of Los Angeles to the foot of the Andes Mountains. In this cool valley the grapes ripen slowly, and rains and frost are a danger. The annual rainfall is between 700-1200 millimeters and the average temperature is 14 degrees. The temperatures of day and night can vary around 17 degrees. One finds here especially a fresh, fruity Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
