Torrontes

Torrontés is a white grape variety from Argentina.

Genetically, this grape comes from the Criolla Chica and the Muscat of Alexandria. There is no relationship whatsoever with the Spanish grape variety of the same name. Synonyms are: Chichera, Loca Blanca, Malvasia, Moscatel Romano, Moscatel Sanjuanino, Palette, Torrontel, Torrontel Riojana and Uva Chichera. The most important is the nutmeg-like aroma, with scents of jasmine, roses and geraniums. The notes of citrus, grapefruit and peach are well recognizable. The acidity is fairly high, which means that the wine is fresh and can best be drunk within one or two years after the harvest. Storing longer does not make sense, because the fresh, fruity notes are gradually becoming less. The most aromatic are the wines of the grapes from the province of La Rioja, namely the Torrontés Riojana. The Torrontés Sanjuanino from the province of San Juan is much less aromatic and also less cultivated. Finally, the species is found much farther south in the direction of Patagonia in the province of Rio Negro and is called Torrontés Mendocino. In the Cafayate region the vines grow at an altitude of 2300 meters.
