Italian wines
Italy is a versatile wine country.
In terms of the difference in microclimate and soil types, Italy is not inferior to France. In addition, Italy has native grape varieties that make great wines. The diversity of grapes, soil types and climates is enormous. This variety ensures that it is useful to be a little aware of the system and the differences in Italy.
Italian red wines
In Italy the largest red wines are made from the pigeons Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Barolo and Barabaresco are made from Nebbiolo. They are wines with large amounts of tannin and cannot actually be drunk young. After a long aging, the wines become softer and more accessible. As a result of the long ripening, naturally all kinds of delicious aromas arise and that makes the wines special. Sangiovese is the grape of Tuscany and is used to make Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. The latter is the most sought after and also one of the most expensive red Italian wines in the world. In addition to the grapes mentioned, the Dolcetto and Barbera grapes are also popular.
Italian white wines
In addition to large red wines, a large number of white wines are also made in Italy. These wines are made from the Catarratto, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Pinot Grigio grapes. With the exception of the last not very well-known grapes. Italian wine drinkers do not initially look at the producer or used grape but at the region of origin of the wine. In general, the grape used is not on the label either. The best areas for Italian white wines are Alto Adige and Friuli (north and east of Venice).
Italian sparkling wines
The most famous Italian sparkling wine is of course Prosecco. This wine is made from a grape with the same name. Prosecco comes in quite a few types. A lot of people drink simple prosecco as a refreshing drink (there is nothing wrong with that), but there are also many makers of prosecco who make very good quality wines. In addition to prosecco, Italian also makes great sparkling wines. Franciacorta is a sparkling wine with its own character but comparable to champagne. The wine is made according to the same method and often has the same price. In addition, Asti Spumante and Moscato d’Asti are also made in Italy. These wines do not have too much alcohol and are sweet. Frizzante wines are made in many different areas of Italy.
